WHAT IS GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making a business easier for AI systems to find, understand, verify and reference in generated answers. It overlaps heavily with technical SEO and information architecture. It is not a separate channel you can buy.

Definition

GEO is a working label for a set of activities, not a formal discipline with an agreed specification. Different suppliers use it to mean different things, so it is worth being specific.

At Transform&, GEO is a useful label for work that may improve how a business is represented in generative search and AI experiences. We do not treat it as a separate magic channel.

Why it matters commercially

When a buyer asks an assistant to compare providers, the system has to build an answer from the information available to it. Clear, specific and corroborated information gives it more to work with. Scattered, gated or contradictory information gives it less.

The commercial value of GEO is therefore not traffic. It is presence in the moment where options are narrowed.

The term and its first systematic study come from published academic research. Aggarwal et al., “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (arXiv:2311.09735)

How it works

GEO does not have a universal implementation checklist. The relevant work depends on the business, market, technical environment and existing Commercial Authority.

What can be measured

You can observe whether and how a company appears across relevant generative experiences and compare that position over time.

The more difficult question is why the result looks the way it does. That analysis is separate.

How GEO differs from SEO

Traditional SEO optimises for a ranked list of links against a query. GEO optimises for being used as material in a synthesised answer.

A generated answer usually surfaces a much smaller set of names and sources than a search results page, which increases the value of clear, self-contained explanations and verifiable claims.

Most of the underlying work — accessibility, structure, clarity, authority — is shared. Anyone telling you GEO replaces SEO is selling a rebrand.

Common mistakes

  • Publishing large volumes of thin content in the hope of being picked up.
  • Adding structured data that does not match the visible page.
  • Writing for models instead of writing clearly for people, which usually produces both worse copy and worse answers.
  • Assuming a file such as llms.txt guarantees anything. It is a signal at best.

Limitations

No supplier can guarantee that a model mentions, cites or recommends a company. The systems are opaque, change frequently, and vary by user and region.

What can be done is to remove the reasons a system would leave you out, and to measure the result honestly over time.

Transform& provides GEO and AEO services as part of its broader search and AI visibility work. Commercial Authority is the wider condition Transform& examines behind those outcomes.
