What Commercial Authority means
Commercial Authority describes the position a business builds when the information and recognition around it make the company easier to understand, trust and compare.
The canonical definition lives on our /commercial-authority page.
How is Commercial Authority different from SEO, GEO and AI visibility?
None of these replaces another. Each answers a different question about the same business.
- SEO: improves and measures visibility in search results.
- GEO: focuses on making information easier for generative systems to find, understand and use.
- AI visibility: measures whether and how often a company appears across selected AI answers.
- Commercial Authority: looks across the information, evidence, competition and visibility behind all of them.
Can Commercial Authority be measured?
Commercial Authority is not reduced to one number. Transform& measures relevant outcomes and conditions separately, then interprets them together through CASS.
Why rankings alone are incomplete
A ranking tells you that a page was placed above other pages for a query. It does not tell you whether the business was understood, whether its claims could be verified, or whether it would survive a comparison.
A page can rank well and the company can still be absent when buyers ask AI systems to compare providers. Ranking for a query and being represented in a generated comparison are different outcomes.
Why AI mentions alone are incomplete
Being named in a generated answer is useful, but a mention is not a recommendation, and it is not evidence that anything about the company was verified.
A company can appear in ChatGPT and still lack credible support for important claims. A company can publish thousands of pages and still leave basic commercial questions unanswered. Monitoring mentions tells you the score of the match, not why you are losing it.
Authority is bigger than one channel
A company is represented through information it controls, the market around it and sources it does not control. The balance differs by business, which is why Transform& does not apply a fixed public checklist.
Relationship to search visibility
Search visibility is an observable outcome. Commercial Authority describes part of what makes that outcome possible: pages machines can access and interpret, clear ownership of topics, consistent facts, and corroborated claims.
Improving Commercial Authority does not guarantee rankings. Many factors influence search results, including changes no supplier controls. What it does is remove reasons a company would be passed over.
Relationship to AI visibility
AI visibility — how often a company appears across a defined set of buyer questions in selected AI systems — is likewise an outcome, and one that varies between runs.
Generated answers can draw on model knowledge, retrieved sources or both. In every case, clearer public information gives the business a stronger source of truth to work from.
