Citation, mention, recommendation
A mention names you. A citation points to supporting evidence. A recommendation puts you forward as an option. Most reporting blurs the three, which makes it impossible to act on.
Citation tracking shows which pages and third-party sources repeatedly appear around the questions that matter to your buyers. That pattern helps show what information is being surfaced as evidence.

What makes a page citable
There is no universal checklist that guarantees a citation. Different systems select and present sources differently.
In general, clear and accessible information is more useful as evidence than vague promotional copy, but the important question is what actually appears around the questions relevant to your market.
Why promotional pages can be weak sources
Promotional pages often provide less supporting detail than reference or factual content, which can make them less useful as evidence.
Where your citations actually come from
Not everything cited about your company is on your domain. Trade publications, directories, review platforms, standards bodies and partner sites all get used as evidence, and they often describe you less accurately than you would.
This is why authority coverage matters. If the only place a claim exists is your own homepage, there is nothing to corroborate it with.
What next?
Citation tracking can show where your business is appearing as evidence. It does not explain the full reason why.
If the gap matters commercially, the next step is diagnosis rather than publishing more content by default.
Limitations
Not all systems reveal their sources, and those that do may not show every source used. Citation measurement is therefore partial by nature.
It is still worth tracking, because the direction of travel is informative even when the absolute number is incomplete.
